The 8 Best ‘90s Movies That Are Worth Watching [And Rewatching]
Why I love the ‘90s decade
The ‘90s is a time when there were no smartphones, the internet was not as common as it is today. When I had to meet my friends, we had to agree on a place and time beforehand. We were almost never late for meet-ups for fear of being left behind. And when we finally see each other, we exchanged a lot of stories.
The movies that defined the ‘90s
Aside from the simplicity of life, I think it’s the movies that defined the ‘90s decade. For me, those ‘90s movies featured stories that made more sense and were more profound, the actors were legitimately good, and they featured socially-relevant issues.
Sure, there are current movies that are of the same caliber as the ‘90s movies but they seemed to be fewer these days. Now, the norm is more special effects and cheesy love stories.
What I consider as the best ‘90s movies
The enhanced community quarantine in the first half of 2020 gave me a lot of time to do things that I have long wanted to do and that includes re-watching most of the ‘90s movies that I love. You see, I try to re-watch movies because I get to appreciate their stories more now that I’ve already matured.
When I was younger, I just watched them without really understanding the stories on a deeper level. I’d laugh at comedies or feel sad at dramas but what I felt were mostly superficial or not relatable to me.
Now that I’m older, the stories tackled in those ‘90s movies are more relevant to me, probably because of the experience that I have gained over the last decade or so.
Anyway, here are some of the ‘90s movies that I watched during quarantine:
1. The Sunchaser (1996)
I first saw The Sunchaser in 1998 but I missed the beginning so I did not quite understand the entirety of the story. It tells the story of a teenage convict boy who was dying of cancer and his millionaire doctor.

The boy, who was part Cherokee, kidnapped his doctor to take him to an Arizona Native American Reservation where he believes there is a lake that would cure him of his cancer. The long journey led to realizations and an unlikely friendship between the two.
The film stars Woody Harrelson and John Seda.
2. Hocus Pocus (1993)
Hocus Pocus is a comedy film that tells the story of three witches who were accidentally resurrected after 300 years after a boy lit the cursed Candle of Black Flame. The witches plotted revenge against the Salem townsfolk who were responsible for their execution.

The movie is funny, entertaining, and suspenseful in some parts. This is one of those movies that people from different generations will find amusing.
Hocus Pocus stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy.
3. Death Becomes Her (1992)
I saw Death Becomes Her on cable TV when I was in college but I didn’t get to start it. I found it hilarious, so I had to see it in full. It was a good thing that I was able to finally see Death Becomes Her during the lockdown.

Death Becomes Her is about two former friends who took a potion that gave them eternal youth. However, it also gave them eternal life, so that when both of them physically die, they become resurrected as “living” corpses or practically thinking zombies.
Because of their condition, both try their best to convince their friend to take the potion so that he could help take care of them for eternity.
Death Becomes Her stars Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn, and Bruce Willis.
4. Can’t Hardly Wait (1998)
I consider Can’t Hardly Wait as my favorite teen-oriented movie. It reminded me so much of my high school days so it was very relatable.

Can’t Hardly Wait is the story of a boy who finally had the courage to tell his feelings to the girl of his dreams, even if the prospect of her liking him seemed a long shot. In the end, the effort paid off because the two of them eventually became sweethearts.
It stars Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ethan Embry, Seth Green, and Lauren Ambrose.
5. The Truman Show (1998)
I have to admit that I didn’t immediately understand the concept of The Truman Show when I first saw it on TV during college. However, I eventually understood the story and loved the movie when I re-watched it. I found it really memorable and extremely funny that I watched it again during the quarantine.

The Truman Show is the story of a man who eventually discovers that his entire life is a reality TV show and that his friends, loved ones, and neighbors are all actors. He sought escape from his artificial world to find the truth and, in the end, succeeded in doing so.
The Truman Show stars Jim Carrey playing the titular role.
6. Legends of the Fall (1994)
I first watched Legends of the Fall during high school and I couldn’t forget the musical scoring. I found the movie to be deeply sad and moving but extremely magnetic at the same time.

The Legends of the Fall tells the story of three brothers whose lives took many twists and turns, many of which were tragic events. In the end, those who were still alive carried on with their lives until their death.
The Legends of the Fall stars Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, Aidan Quinn, Julia Ormond, and Henry Thomas.
7. Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion (1997)
Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. If you want to have a good laugh to chase the blues away, this is one of the movies that you should see.
Photo from Wikipedia
It tells the story of two friends who are about to attend their high school reunion. They both wanted to appear very successful in their careers so they made up stories only to be uncovered and laughed at later on. Because of that, they decide to be themselves and enjoy the reunion.
Later on, some unexpected plot twists happened, thus leading them to discover that the people whom they envied were not really as successful as they thought them to be. As for them, opportunities opened, and the success that they were longing for finally happened.
8. Edward Scissorhands (1990)
This movie is about the story of a young man named Edward, who is a humanoid, and the handiwork of an old inventor. Edward has scissors for hands, hence his name. I first saw Edward Scissorhands when I was very young so I thought it was a horror movie, especially with Edward's blades, makeup, and hair.
While the movie is a romance fantasy, it contains many elements of comedy and even drama. Edward Scissorhands is poignant and unforgettable and may even be considered as one of the movie masterpieces of the 90s.
Epilogue
So these are eight of my most favorite movies from the ‘90s. If there was something good about the COVID-19 lockdown, it’s that I had extra time in my hands to do things that I love such as rewatching these movies. These ‘90s movies definitely brought back a lot of happy memories from my youth and reminded me of all the things that I loved about the ‘90s era.
