Working from home during the pandemic
When I started working from home during the pandemic, I thought it was a dream come true. It had so many advantages because I won’t have to get out of bed too early plus, I don’t have to endure the daily commute to the office. I can work in my regular clothes except when there are online meetings that require us to look presentable.
I’m certainly thankful to be allowed to work from home. However, just like in any situation or setting, working from home does have its fair share of difficulties and stressful moments.
The challenges of working from home
While doing home-based remote work is the ideal setup for many individuals, it does bring with it different types of challenges.
In terms of the work itself, I noticed that our company has been a little bit skeptical of work from home employees since it’s a traditional business organization. As such, we felt that we were closely monitored when working from home. It was almost like we had to report our move every minute.
Then there’s the challenge of the blurred boundary between work and family. Since I was just working from home and not worrying about traffic and commuting, I tend to put in more hours in my work. I realized later on that my work hours were already encroaching on my family time.
On the other hand, since my small kids can see me in the house, they can just go to me and ask me to carry them. Now, who couldn’t resist small kids? I certainly could not but sometimes, I will have to take unplanned breaks because of those moments.
How to reduce work from home stress
As my work from home days progressed, I realized that I needed to regain my balance. I had to start by reducing stress so that I can properly manage my time at work and not sacrifice my time for my family.
Here’s how I did it:
1. Stick to a routine
One of the best methods to get your rhythm back is to stick to a routine. It can help you better manage your time for your work and family.

I did this by listing the things that I needed to do for the day. This has helped me manage my work in the office so it will still be effective while I work from home.
How does my work-from-home routine look like? It’s nothing extraordinary. I start with breakfast, then proceed with my morning deliverables, then a short morning break. I also try my best to eat lunch on time, then continue with my afternoon tasks. I don’t take a break in the afternoon because we were following shortened working hours.
Then, when it’s not too hot outside, I take my kids for our unli dapa time. This routine has been really beneficial to me then and up to now when we still have work-from-home days.
2. It’s okay to take a break
Initially, I thought that I can completely eliminate stress when I being to work from home. Turned out that wasn’t the case. I tended to just dive into work without pausing, so I tend to be more tired at the end of the day.
What I did was incorporate a short break in the morning. A short exercise like jump ropes and pushups was enough to get my blood going and also to get my focus back. If I get hungry, I get something to eat and share it with my wife who is also working from home.
It doesn’t even have to be a long break. A 15-minute break is enough to reenergize you.
3. Get moving
You can allot your break time for exercise or do it in the afternoon after work. Don’t ever forego exercising even when you are just staying at home because it will keep both your mind and body healthy. I found that exercising even for just a few minutes did a lot of good to me, especially when it came to my mood and concentration.
It also doesn’t have to be a conventional workout with equipment and all. My most favorite exercise is to play with my kids in the afternoon. All the chasing and running around is enough to provide me my daily dose of cardio exercise.
4. Eat healthy food
When staying at home and the convenience of food delivery is just within easy reach, it’s easy to fall for the trap of eating unhealthy meals.
